Granby School of Wrestling Camp

As we start getting ready for the summer, it is time again for our annual Granby School of Wrestling Camp.  Steve Martin, Head Coach of Old Dominion and owner of the Granby School of Wrestling will be coming down to put on their clinic June 3rd, 4th and 5th at Vestavia Wrestling Club.  The camp is limited to 70 wrestlers this year to cut down on the large crowd that we had last year.  They are filling up quickly so do not wait until the last minute to register; we really want all of our wrestlers to take advantage of this opportunity.  The Granby School of Wrestling has decided to donate a portion of the proceeds from the clinic to Vestavia Wrestling Club, so come out and support us this summer!  I have added a link to camp and registration.    http://granbyschool.com/clinics/alabama-clinic/ Reguards,     Christian Staylor Vestavia Wrestling Club Cell: 757.362.2005 http://vestaviawrestling.com/

Vestavia Wrestling Club (1998 Shades Crest Road in Birmingham) will be hosting match night this Wednesday from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. The cost is $2.00 for spectators and wrestlers. Come get some matches against wrestlers from clubs throughout the state. Match Night 2011

We will be having Match Night the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month throughout the spring and summer starting tonight at 6:30PM.  The entry fee will be $2.00 for all wrestlers, spectators and coaches. All athletes will need a USA card to participate. The coaches do not coach their wrestlers while on the mat, which creates a no pressure situation for wrestlers to try new moves they have been learning. Please spread the word to everyone on your contact list. This event will start at 6:30 and will run to about 8:30. You can expect 4 to 6 matches in that time. Coaches will help officiate matches and there is no elimination. There are no weigh ins and wrestlers can just pick kids they want to wrestle with and wait their turn. There is no time requirement between matches.  Wrestlers will be wrestling Folkstyle, Freestyle and Greco.  All age groups are welcome. NHSCA Nationals

Vestavia Wrestling Club will be attending the NHSCA Nationals in Virginia Beach, VA March 29th through April 4th.  

 

All ages from 4th grade through high school will be competing on different days throughout the week.

Deadline is Saturday, February 19th, 2011 at 5pm!

1) The wrestler must be a resident of the State of Alabama. Be certain of your wrestler's weight class; your wrestler must have previously competed at that age group and weight in at least 3 Alabama USA tournaments this season, with the exception of Schoolboy/Middle school, which will not have a minimum.

2) Alabama USA Standards will be used for weight classes and age divisions. Each wrestler must compete in his appropriate age group and may only compete in ONE weight class. Wrestler may not change weight classes once pre-registered.

3) Weigh-in's will be in a singlet with 1-pound allowance. There will be a skin check. Wrestler must make weight at registered weight class to compete.

4) Coaches must maintain a visible USA membership card to be allowed on mats and in the hospitality room. Only two coaches allowed mat side during a match. This will be strictly enforced.

5) Registration fee per wrestler is $17. Register on line at Trackwrestling.com. Wrestlers must have their USA card AND trackwrestling number to compete.

6) Seeding will be used. When you preregister, please take time to note your wrestler's record and marquee wins in the seeding section. A seeding meeting will be held on Sunday, February 20th, time and location TBD, the information you provided will help seed your wrestler.

Update

Dixie Nationals was a huge success, both as a state and a club this past week.  Not only did we have a record numbers of wrestlers from Vestavia Wrestling Club participate, but we also competed exceptionally well.  In the state dual meet, the day before the tournament we had 8 wrestlers compete for Team Alabama including Charlie Hamilton, Matthew Paugh, Josh Smith, Asher Hamilton, Braxton Worthington, Riley Pike, Josh Rogers, Austin Gandler and John Couch.  VWC members competing along side their other Alabama Team members faired well and finished 4th and 5th as a state.  Finishing this high as a state is a huge improvement from last year when Team Alabama finished last.  Alabama is an up and coming wrestling state and it is good to be in one of the premier clubs leading the way.  In the open tournament following the dual meet we had just as much if not more success.  We had several place winners including Josh Smith, Jacob Edwards, James Edwards, Josh Rogers, Braxton Worthington, Austin Gandler, Carter Sullivan and Konnor Knopf.  Having such a high number of place winners from our club is outstanding and it goes to show that we are headed in the right direction.  I am proud of everyone that had the courage to compete at a tournament of this caliber.  It is one of the toughest tournaments in the country and Vestavia Wrestling Club did very well.            As shown on the calendar we will not be having practice on Wednesday, January 5th.  We are encouraging everyone to attend the Vestavia, Pizitz and Youth Club dual meet which starts at 5:00PM at Vestavia High School.  I am matching up our wrestlers with other wrestlers from Alabaster and Clay Wrestling Clubs.  I will contact you this week if we have a match for you on Wednesday.  Most of our members will not be able to compete in this event simply because there are not enough athletes from the other clubs.  However, we strongly encourage everyone to attend the dual meet and watch all three dual meets (Youth, Pizitz and Vestavia High).       Dixie Nationals marks the half way point for Vestavia Wrestling Club's wrestling season.  It has been a great first half and we have built a strong base to build off of for the rest of the season.  It is time to start reflecting on our goals and  see what we need to do to accomplish them.  The Warrior Challenge is coming up this Saturday, January 8th and we need everyone to be in attendance!  We will weigh in as usual on Thursday after practice.  It is very important that everyone attend the rest of the tournaments this year to prepare for the state tournament which is coming up fast.           Team Alabama gear is now posted on our site!  If you plan on attending any out of state tournament and would like to purchase this year's Team Alabama gear, please do so by January 17th.       Christian Staylor Vestavia Wrestling Club Cell: 757.362.2005 http://vestaviawrestling.com/
